Spain Park High School Band -  "The Pride of the Park"

Dear Pride of the Park Band Students and Band Community,

With a full semester behind our backs, it is beneficial to take a moment to reflect on our group accomplishments. Our marching band program, "Peace, Love and Rock 'n Roll," was both hugely entertaining and successfully competitive. Clinicians and judges, alike, took notice of the band's superior performance and dedication to excellence. The band's winter concert was well attended and featured beautiful performances by the Percussion Ensemble, Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. Finally, The Pride of the Park made the 10-hour trip south to Orlando, Florida during the Christmas break to participate in the "Fresh from Florida" Parade and marched down Main Street USA in Disney's Magic Kingdom. I hope you had a chance to view the band's outstanding performance on our local ABC affiliate. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The start of the new semester has brought further success with major milestones reached by performance groups and individuals, alike. Both JV and Varsity Dazzlers won state championships in the Jazz Division of the Alabama UDA Dance Team Competition. Seniors Sammi Lapinski and Caroline Reiner both earned individual awards in the solo division. Instrumentalists Andy Choi and Van Rogers were both selected for the Alabama All-State Honor Band Festival to be held later this semester. Several other instrumentalists have been selected by state colleges and universities to participate in honor band festivities at the University of Alabama, Auburn University, and Troy University.

Currently, each area of our band program is working diligently to prepare for our separate winter and spring activities. Instrumentalists are making ready for our Music Performance Assessment held in February. Guard members are preparing for their Winter Guard season which begins this weekend - Good luck girls! Other local UDA competitions are just around the corner for our Dazzlers and a trip to Nationals is planned for the Varsity squad. Several of students have experienced victory outside of the band room: academic awards, athletic championships in basketball and track, theater honors, and so much more. There is never a dull moment for students involved in the band department!

We are now moving into a time of year when students and parents begin to discuss plans for next year. Counselors will soon be discussing with you and your student class schedules for the 2012-2013 school year. Let me encourage you to make Band a part of your student's continued high school experience. As you already know, being a part of the band automatically places your student in a select group of young people providing a worthwhile, interesting, and educational activity that does not exclude other interests. Band students strengthen their sense of discipline, cooperation, and focus while receiving a well-rounded education. Nothing better prepares your student for the challenges and excitement of life as an adult.

The Pride of the Park has enjoyed great success this year. We look forward to continued growth and development - this year and for years to come.

Go Jags! Go Band!!!

Chris Neugent,  Band Director
